Is your credit union looking for a New Year’s resolution? Here’s one you can do for Credit Union Times – start bragging. Going into 2006 there is clearly renewed interest in credit unions documenting how they serve those of modest means. I have seen many credit union announcements of late that document the credit union difference. A few credit unions sent in press releases about their new payday loan alternative products. One press release just this week caught my eye as it announced the credit union was rewarding its members, who have had troubled financial pasts, by upgrading them to no-fee share draft accounts if they go one year without an NSF. Then of course there are hordes of credit unions offering members year-end dividends. These are all positive credit union announcements and I’m sure there are many credit unions doing these types of things, but for some reason they haven’t let us know. My message to credit union marketers is this – we want to hear about your positive news, especially if it’s about helping your financially-challenged members. We will always cover the controversial issues, that’s a big part of who we are, but we also want to cover how credit unions are doing more to serve the underserved. So show us. Let us know what you’re doing, and Credit Union Times could turn into an unregulated place where credit unions “document” their service to those of modest means. [email protected]
