LATHAM, N.Y. - Two New York members of Congress, both members ofthe House Financial Services Committee, co-authored, signed andcirculated a "Dear Colleague" letter prior to the Nov. 3rd Ways andMeans Committee credit union tax hearing, urging support for thecontinuation of the credit union tax-exemption. The letter fromRep. Carolyn Maloney (D) and Peter King (R) and addressed toCommittee Chairman Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) and Ranking MemberCharles Rangel (D-N.Y.), advocated for the tax-exempt status ofcredit unions they were granted by Congress in 1937. Adding theirsignature to the letter "to maintain the present tax structure forcredit unions that Congress has always found to strike the bestbalance for the financial services sector" were New YorkRepresentatives Timothy Bishop (D), Sherwood Boehlert (R), JosephCrowley (D), Eliot Engle (D), Carolyn McCarthy (D), Gregory Meeks(D) and John Sweeney (R).
