WAKEFIELD, R.I. – Chartway Federal Credit Union and Belmont Market have awarded a shopping spree to 91-year old Ethel Cort -who wasted little time filling up her cart. Cort, a frequent shopper of the Belmont Market, was selected at random from over 800 entries and refused an offer to use a motorized cart or let someone else shop for her. The shopping spree is part of a promotion to celebrate the opening of Chartway FCU's two community branches in Wakefield and Warwick, Rhode Island. "I went for a big plant first," said Cort, hours after she walked and jogged up and down the aisles of the Belmont Market. "It's in my kitchen. It's gorgeous. I've never won anything, I felt like I was a celebrity." Cort didn't slow down from there. After filling her first cart with the plant, Ethel snagged some smaller plants and then went for pies – "because it's the holidays" – cooked chicken, turkey, pot roast, lamb chops, steak, shrimp, veggies and cheesecake – "I love it, I had a piece for lunch today." She also made sure not to forget Luke, her 10-year-old Spitz/Lab mix that will be the recipient of lots of dog food. When her 9.1 minutes were up – the original contest was for three minutes, but cosponsors Chartway FCU and the Belmont Market agreed to increase it to reflect her nonagenarian status – Ethel had racked up $662.91 in merchandise.
