WASHINGTON-Similar to the credit union community, politics is an incestuous industry. According to a report on Nexus, retiring Senator Paul Sarbanes' son, John P. Sarbanes, is running for Congressman Ben Cardin's (D-Md.) House seat. Cardin is vacating his post to run for the elder Sarbanes' Senate seat. Both Senate Banking Committee Ranking Member Sarbanes and Congressman Cardin, known among financial institutions for his work on retirement funds, have been credit union-friendly. The younger Sarbanes, also a Democrat, heads up Venable LLP's health care practice in its Baltimore office. As an aside, former NAFCU staffers Bill Donovan and Gwen Baker, just headed to Venable this month. This is the younger Sarbanes' first time running for elected office. Though no Republicans are vying for the seat, the primary field is crowded. Former Baltimore Health Commissioner Peter Beilenson, state Sen. Paula Hollinger, Delegate Neil Quinter and Anne Arundel County Councilman Bill Burlison are also running for the 3rd District seat. Anne Arundel County Executive Janet Owens and Cardin's nephew, Delegate John Cardin, are considering campaigns, the report said.
