BALTIMORE – MECU of Baltimore, Inc. has hosted its first annual Charity Cup Golf Tournament to support the outreach efforts of its employees and volunteers who donate their time and open their wallets to help non-profit organizations in the community. While a majority of the event proceeds will go to help credit unions and their employees and volunteers devastated by Hurricane Katrina through the National Credit Union Foundation, local organizations will also benefit including: Credit Union for Kids, Fort Worthington Elementary School, Harbel Housing Partnership, Meals on Wheels, Our Daily Bread, Sandtown Habitat for Humanity, Yorkwood Elementary School. MECU staffers also cashed in a day's worth of vacation to help raise funds for Hurricane Katrina Relief. A total of $29,000 was presented to NCUF Disaster Relief and $10,000 was donated to the American Red Cross. Hurricane Katrina survivors were also lent a helping hand by Baltimore City and MECU members. Some 100 individuals and crews from the Departments of Public Works, Transportation, Recreation and Parks, as well as Fire and Police first responders went to help in devastated St. Bernard Parish until the arrival of the 82nd Airborne.
