TACOMA, Wash. – Heeding the national call and citing a "need to take care of our own," the Foundation of the Washington Credit Union League in a two week period is now near the top of League givers by raising more than $100,000 for Katrina relief. Of the $100,000 total, $17,000 was raised in proceeds from a golf outing held here coinciding with the League's annual conference Sept. 15-17. Ordinarily, funds raised at the golf outing go to community outreach, but the League Foundation recommended the moneys be diverted to the National Credit Union Foundation. "Perhaps you didn't know it but there are 2,000 to 3,000 of Washington members in the Gulf Coast states," said Bob Schumacher, Foundation chairman and president/CEO of Snohomish County Pud CU in Everett. Many of those members are Boeing employees represented by the $5 billion BECU, of Federal Way. Apart from the $17,000 brought in from the outing,, the Foundation drew down $5,000 from is own account to provide "direct relief to identified members, staff and board of directors of credit unions in the four-state Gulf area," Ever since Labor Day, said Schumacher, contributions have poured in from Washington State CUs, both big and small. Schumacher said he also understood the motivation of individual Leagues to use discretion in how collected funds are disbursed. "I know if we had a 7.0 earthquake up here, I'd want to make sure we had enough funds to help out our credit unions."
