DULUTH, Ga. – Officials from the Georgia Credit Union Affiliates recently met with those from the Louisiana and Florida Credit Union Leagues to coordinate longer-term Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Georgia Credit Union Affiliates reports that some of the state's credit unions have volunteered to assist in renovating homes to temporarily house displaced families while other have coordinated a variety of fundraisers to aid in the rebuilding process. Other examples of relief have included the implementation of several emergency hurricane relief loans; numerous donations of bottled water; food; phone cards; and clothing. GCUA officials traveled to Florida the week of Sept. 12 to meet with both the Florida and Louisiana Credit Union leagues to coordinate what the next steps will be in providing relief, the GCUA said. "Georgia credit union CEOs were asked to report on what their respective organizations were doing to facilitate relief," said Mike Mercer, GCUA president/CEO. "The response has been nothing less than overwhelming, regardless of credit union size; the creativity and depth of outreach that Georgia credit unions have extended through this tragedy illuminates the movements' true adherence to the `people helping people' philosophy."
