COVINA, Calif. – Christian Community CU donated over $50,000 to various disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf States. The money was generated from CCCU members’ use of their credit and debit card – “The Cards that Give to Missions & Ministries.” The funds were distributed to support the relief efforts of the American Baptist Churches USA, the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, World Vision, the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. CCCU employees contributed an additional $2,500 through a matching program offered by the credit union’s board. CCCU’s unique credit and debit card program donates a portion of the interchange income to mission and ministry projects. To date, the credit union has donated over $1.5 million to national and international ministry projects, disaster relief efforts, church planting, college and seminary scholarships and other faith-based projects. The annual donation goal is $200,000. Commenting on the Katrina relief donation, CCCU President/CEO John Walling said, “We wanted to extend our help in a tangible way in support of the victims of Hurricane Katrina during this devastating time in their lives. All our members have a part in this disaster donation. They can feel good knowing that whenever they use their credit or debit card, they are also actively participating in the credit union movement’s philosophy of `People Helping People.’”
