TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Within the first two hours of launching its Adopt-an-Affected Credit Union program to encourage its affiliated credit unions to adopt a credit union in states affected by Hurricane Katrina, 22 FCUL-affiliated CUs responded to the League's call. In kicking off the program, FCUL President/CEO Guy Hood said the program might include operational needs, family and personal needs of the family of volunteers and staff, as well as the idea of supporting economic reconstruction of the area with lending programs that could support local community needs. FCUL set the tone for the program by "adopting" the staff of the Louisiana and Mississippi Leagues, to provide a direct and personal approach to helping rebuild families and lives. "This is a disaster of unimaginable proportions. Initially this will be far more of a humanitarian effort than even our Florida experiences from last year. The restoration of credit union operations in the affected areas will be addressed as the people who operate them get back on their feet," said Hood. Florida credit unions interested in adopting a CU should contact the Florida League, www.fcul.org.
