MIRAMAR, Fla. – Eastern Financial Florida CU has kicked off a month-long campaign to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The $1.8 billion CU – the largest CU in South Florida and the first largest in the state – has declared September “Red Cross Month” and will focus on raising money through members and employees for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Throughout the month, Eastern Financial will have “Jeans Days,” giving the CU’s 670 employees in South Florida and Tampa the privilege of wearing jeans to work one day a week in exchange for making a monetary donation to the Relief Fund. Team Council, a group of employee volunteers who design fundraising programs for the CU throughout the year, plan to develop other opportunities for Eastern Financial employees to help the victims. In addition, credit union members will be able to make a donation to the Red Cross Disaster Relief fund by visiting any of the CU’s 22 branches or calling into the Service Center and electronically transferring funds from one of their accounts. Eastern Financial CEO Stephen McGill has promised to match up to $25,000 of the CU’s money of what employees and members are able to bring in. “We in South Florida are so very lucky to have survived Katrina with some inconvenience and some damage, but not nearly to the extent of our brothers and sisters in the Gulf States. Our credit union will make it a priority for at least one month to do whatever we can to help out the cause,” he said.
