Holy Rosary Credit Union, Dover, N.H. has helped make it easy for the community to make donations to the Dover Mounted Police Unit. Upon hearing that funding for the mounted patrol was being cut from the city’s budget the credit union opened a donation account in their name and contributed $1,000. A total of $9,500 needs to be raised from the horses’ hay and feed. Silver State Schools Credit Union, Las Vegas, has sponsored the Laptops for Books project. A collaboration of the Clark County School District Library Services and the credit union the project is designed to increase the number of books students read independently, as well as expose students to literature they might not otherwise read. The books are selected by school librarians across the state, and students, from elementary through high school, are required to make selections from this list and write a short report on the books they read. Since Laptops for Books was begun three years ago, the credit union hasdonated six Acer laptop computers to each year’s winners. Over 4,000 students participated for the 2004-05 schools year. Fremont Federal Credit Union, Ohio, has been busy within its community. Not only has the credit union raised over $1,600 for the American Cancer Society through various fundraisers but has also sponsored a financial literacy program in 16 grade schools and seven high schools in Sandusky County. FFCU supplies student workbooks, teacher’s guide and guest speaker. An optional tour of our 1800′s historical vault is included. Tampa Bay Area Credit Unions, Fla., has donated $500 to the Pasadena Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. The contribution will help provide arts and crafts, trophies, and ribbons to the area kids who participate in the program.
