WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – At home in his district during Congress' August recess, Indiana Congressman Steve Buyer (R) accepted an invitation from the Indiana Credit Union League to meet with credit union constituents from his district to discuss credit union pending issues including CURIA. Accompanied by state Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Monticello), who is Buyer's district operations director, Buyer participated in a roundtable discussion held in the board room at Purdue EFCU. League President John McKenzie and VP of Governmental Affairs Chris Beaumont opened the discussion by remarking how important the passage of the CURIA bill is to consumers and small business owners who are credit union members. They reviewed modernization and new power legislation passed by Congress for banks during the past six years, and emphasized in contrast, that H.R. 1151 didn't provide CUs any new powers. Buyer also heard from the group about the importance of the federal tax exemption, the structure of credit unions and the role they play in meeting the needs of consumers and small businesses. Buyer, in turn, used the meeting as an opportunity to explain to the group of credit union representatives some of the other things he's been doing on their behalf. Buyer is chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee and a member of the Energy & Commerce and Health Care Committees. McKenzie described the roundtable discussion as “a very positive exchange.” He said he appreciated Buyer's willingness to participate in an in-depth discussion of issues that are important to credit unions.
