DURHAM, N.C. - Self-Help Credit Union recently providedfinancial intervention for two conservation groups that bought1,568 acres of woodlands here possibly, preventing the state fromdeveloping it. The Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and TheNature Conservancy paid $16 million to hold the property called"World's Edge." The woodlands are home to waterfalls and rareanimals and plants. Earlier this year, state officials had proposedto build a new park here. The $188 million Self-Help CU, along withthe Open Space Institute and private donors, provided the financingto help the conservation groups purchase the land. State officialssay they will still apply for grant money to help buy the land.
