WASHINGTON – NAFCU’s political action committee made hefty donations to the two lead sponsors of the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (H.R. 2317) in the first half of the year. Both Congressmen Ed Royce (R-Calif.) and Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.) received $10,000 contributions from NAFCU/PAC. During the first half of 2005, NAFCU brought in more than $80,000, but that figure is expected to be much higher with two big PAC money-makers-the recently completed Annual Conference and Congressional Caucus-in the second half of the year. July’s Annual Conference brought in $43,000 to the PAC. Other top recipients from NAFC/PAC were Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) at $5,000, House Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee Chairman Spencer Bachus at $4,000, House Judiciary Chairman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) at $3,500, and House Financial Services Committee Member Brad Sherman (D-Calif.). Receiving $2,000 contributions were Senators Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), John Sununu (R-N.H.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), as well as House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and committee members Peter King (R-N.Y.), and Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.). NAFCU/PAC also made a $15,000 contribution to the National Republican Congressional Committee for a dinner, which was chaired by Bachus, it held in March. The Democratic dinner was the same evening, but NAFCU does plan to attend a different one. In all, the PAC made $144,725 in contributions through June 31, 2005 and had $105,240 remaining in its coffers at that time.
