SPOKANE, Wash. – The Neighborhood Assets Program – a partnership between Spokane Neighborhood Action Programs (SNAP), Numerica CU and Washington State Employees CU – recently celebrated its one-year anniversary and had lots of success stories to show for itself. Its first year of successes include: opening 214 accounts; providing active counseling to 68 members; since the previous April, 165 people have received counseling; Neighborhood Assets members' accounts have a total balance of $28,694. The program's mission is to provide unbanked, lower-income residents in Spokane County with the opportunity to rebuild their relationship with a financial institution and to develop a healthy pattern of saving and banking through financial education and counseling. The program was partially funded by a Washington Credit Union Foundation Community Outreach grant. Individual credit unions, chapters, CU staff or volunteers, and affiliated credit union organizations can apply for grants to support Community Outreach programs and projects up to $5,000 per grant
