COLUMBIA, S.C. – Marking his first year as president/CEO of the South Carolina Credit Union League next month, Garry L. Parks is finding one of those custom analyses performed by CUNA and the American Association of Credit Union Leagues a useful management tool. "It was a wonderful opportunity to see what we need to do to take on new initiatives and evaluate our operations," said Parks commenting on the two-day analysis conducted pre-July 4 in League offices. Interviews were conducted with League staff and board members, said Parks who maintained the AACUL study provided guidelines on how to evaluate systems and structure. Parks of South Carolina said the AACUL analysis "reinforced a lot of hunches I had on areas where we excel and where we have deficiencies." He declined to elaborate. Parks, a retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Marine Corps and former executive in its manpower division before taking the League job last August, also repeated earlier League assertions that Citadel University approached him as a candidate for its presidency this spring. "I didn't go searching for that job," said Parks adding that his League job gives him a chance to serve "in this absolutely wonderful movement." Parks is a Citadel graduate. Meanwhile, Kermit Larson, president/CEO of the North Dakota League, said an AACUL custom analysis of his League is slated for this fall. With expenses paid by each League, the AACUL each year conducts several of these analyses for trade groups that ask for them. The North Dakota board requested the analysis last May.
