MODESTO, Calif. – Food Processors Credit Union and El Concilio/Council for the Spanish Speaking have teamed up to offer specialized products and services to unbanked Latinos. The partnership is being touted as the first of its kind in the San Joaquin Valley that targets the low-income, Spanish-speaking communities in the region. "We have been serving Stanislaus County for over 40 years, and this move to San Joaquin County represents a positive step forward for the credit union allowing us to bring our high-quality, low-cost financial services to the underserved people in this area," said FPCU President/CEO Joe Duran. A crowd of well-wishers and dignitaries including representatives from the offices of State Senator Michael Machado and Congressman Richard Pombo, as well as Brian Gately of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, gathered for a ribbon-cutting that officially opened the El Concilio branch. The FPCU satellite at El Concilio is open Thursdays and Fridays offering savings and checking accounts, certificates of deposit, money-orders, check cashing, money transfers, loans, and more with the ATM available 24 hours a day. Plans for extending the hours and days of operation are already underway and will increase as the membership builds. "We have long looked for a financial services partner to help our clients learn how to manage their money and build savings. We found the perfect match with Food Processors Credit Union because they have programs that focus on Latinos with little knowledge of banking in the U.S., and they share our vision for the betterment of the community," said Executive Director of El Concilio Jos Rodriquez.
