WATERLOO, Iowa – The Iowa Senate has passed a resolution declaring April 2005 as Financial Literacy for Youth Month to increase awareness of the need for youth financial literacy education. This year over 3,300 elementary students throughout central and northeast Iowa are learning about saving thanks to a program called Saving with Mandy and Randy sponsored by John Deere Community Credit Union. With this curriculum supplement program, second grade students use a workbook to learn vocabulary words related to saving. The workbook also offers practice activities for students including coin identification, counting, adding and subtracting cents and dollars, and completing a deposit ticket for a savings account. "This program reaches children at an impressionable age. It is important they have an opportunity to discuss and practice savings skills in the classroom," said John Deere CCU President/CEO Jean Trainor.
