BALTIMORE – The Maryland Credit Union League described as "especially disappointing" the state legislature's failure to pass a proposed House financial literacy bill before it adjourned April 11. House Joint Resolution 11, introduced by Speaker Michael Busch (D-30), never made it out of the House Rules and Executive Nominations Committee. The measure would have provided for boards of education to integrate financial literacy education into the curriculum. On a positive note, the League reported that no new tax bills were introduced that would affect federal or state chartered CUs, however several bills of interest to CUs were taken up during the session that would affect federal and state CUs such as those involving identity theft, robbery , payment of wages by stored value cards, abandoned property and the deposit of local funds in a financial institution.
