WASHINGTON-NAFCU recently received the “Golden Thinker Award” from the North American Prcis Syndicate for a column on car-buying tips. NAFCU Vice President of Communications Jay Morris was given the award by NAPS for NAFCU’s “Car Loan Quiz” consumer column. When NAPS released the column, it generated 840 newspaper placements with a total readership of over 94 million people. NAPS is a service that provides camera-ready features and articles to America’s community newspapers. NAPS Vice President Jonathan Simon presented Morris with the award. “The Golden Thinker Award from NAPS reflects Jay’s hard work in furthering communications for our credit union members,” NAFCU President and CEO Fred Becker commented. “Every time one of these releases is placed in a newspaper, more people in cities and towns across America read about the credit union message.” He pointed to NAFCU’s push to get more credit union news in the mainstream media with success in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and The Washington Post. The column placed in the top one-fourth of 1% of all releases distributed through NAPS last year. NAPS clients include Fortune 500 companies, over 100 associations, all top 12 public relations firms and over 1,600 NAPS accounts in all. “I think the success of this column is a testament to how popular cars are in America and how auto financing has become an important consumer topic,” Morris said. “The column also points out the advantages of financing through a credit union, which is an important message for consumers to understand.” NAFCU piggybacked on the success of the NAPS column with a radio media tour in the spring of 2004 that featured live and taped interviews of Becker on the pitfalls of zero-zero financing and the advantages of credit union auto financing.
