WASHINGTON – Conferences like CUNA’s GAC are a great place to network with other credit union leaders, but they don’t shed much light on what credit union members think about credit unions. After all it’s the members that every single credit union issue boils down to. Bankruptcy reform is about the members. Net income issues are about the members. Online services are about the members. Banker attacks are about the members, and on and on. In this special feature, Credit Union Times, in a very unscientific fashion, spoke to members around the country from all walks of life to find out what they think about credit unions. Just a few words on the methodology. In most cases Credit Union Times reporters or correspondents -with permission of the credit union – were posted outside or inside a credit union branch, randomly asking members the same questions. Twenty-three credit unions were included in the survey. The questions were geared to find out if the CU was their primary financial institution, if they were happy with CU service, if they knew the difference between a bank and a credit union, and whether or not they were using online services. Of course not all responses were used here. Many members offered simple yes and no answers that were not interesting for publication. Overall, there were a few surprises. Despite all the talk about online services, approximately 60% of those surveyed did not use their credit union’s online services. Also, 65% of members surveyed said the CU was their primary financial institution. Going in, this number was expected to be higher given the interviews were done with members actually visiting the credit union Here’s what members had to say. [email protected]
