NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Newport News Shipbuilding Employees CU has applied for a community charter with the Virginia Bureau of Financial Institutions which, if approved, would be the largest community charter ever granted by state regulators. The $792 million CU, which currently has approximately 73,000 members, applied for approval to expand its field-of-membership to include persons and businesses in the independent municipalities of Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Franklin, Williamsburg, Poquoson, and Suffolk; the Virginia counties of Charles City, Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, Mathews, New Kent, Southampton, Surry, and York; and the North Carolina counties of Currituck, Dare, Gates, Perquimans, Pasquotank, Hertford, Chowan, and Camden. According to 2003 census figures, the areas represent a population of approximately 1.82 million people.
