* Congressmen Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.) and Bob Ney (R-Ohio) plan to introduce national predatory lending standards to preempt states. * CUNA will mostly stay out of the government sponsored enterprises debate, but one provision would give the new regulator authority over products and services and CUNA does not want to see that politicized to inhibit credit union powers. * Social Security is another fight CUNA plans to try to stay out of, but the trade association will follow it closely and ensure that if private accounts are the direction the system will take that credit unions will be included. * CUNA lobbyists also emphasized that a broad cross section of credit unions, not just community development credit unions, are interested in the shifting of the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund from Treasury to Commerce.
