WASHINGTON-Marie Osmond, co-founder of the Children's Miracle Network, recently wrote every member of Congress regarding credit unions' work for CMN, which supports 170 children's hospitals. She noted that America's credit unions have supported CMN for 10 years. "Through their Credit Unions for Kids fund raising program they have raised and donated over $40 million to our children's hospitals across the nation," the singer wrote. "They are passionate and caring. The credit union credo states "where people are worth more than money." They have more than shown us that certainly is true as they work diligently to benefit the 17 million children served annually by our member hospitals." Proceeds from credit unions' April Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run in Washington, D.C. go to benefit CMN. The goal this year is to raise $1 million. Osmond said she wanted to make sure Congress knew of credit unions' investment in America's communities. "As a matter of fact, in our opinion, they are an integral part of America's communities," she stated. The letter comes at a time when the House Ways and Means Committee will be examining nonprofits for the worthiness of their tax-exempt status and banker efforts to tax credit unions continue to crescendo. Bankers have also criticized credit unions for not falling under the Community Reinvestment Act, which requires banks and thrifts to invest in the communities where they do business.
