MADISON, Wis. – The earthquake related ocean surge that devastated many seaside communities in South Asia may be out of the news, but credit union efforts to raise money for the victims continue. The National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF), has announced that it has released $170,000 for the relief effort in support of the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and CUNA, to the Worldwide Credit Union Foundation for use in rebuilding the credit union system in the region. NCUF’s contribution brings the total received by the Worldwide Credit Union Foundation to $350,000, the Foundation reported. WOCCU associate member Sri Lanka Credit Union Federation in Sri Lanka has reported that more than 800 community credit unions have been destroyed in that country alone, the Foundation said. “Funds disbursed through the NCUF Disaster Relief Fund will be used by the WOCCU specifically to help rebuild devastated credit unions in the affected region ,” said Steve Delfin, NCUF’s executive director. “We’re confident humanitarian efforts were well taken care of by organizations that specialize in that type of relief.”
