In Mike Welch's Feb. 9 column, "Might Be Time To Start Asking Who's Kidding Who?", he incorrectly stated my views on bounce protection. Let me set the record straight. I believe credit unions should think long and hard before offering bounce protection. When it is offered, the credit union should be sure that the overdraft protection is clearly explained to members, does not encourage overdrafts and does not involve excessive fees. Bounce protection that encourages overdrafts and excessive fees is predatory. Credit unions that engage in such practices pose a threat to the pro-consumer reputation of all credit unions.
