BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Kevin Chandler, president/CEO, Minnesota Credit Union Network, was appointed chairman of the American Association of Credit Union League's (AACUL) State Issues Advocacy Task Force. The task force, formed in 2003, serves to identify emerging nationwide issues, develop potential solutions and coordinate their implementation. The task force includes 11 league presidents and staff from AACUL and CUNA. Among the issues the task force is keeping its eye on are the rapid consolidation of credit unions, increasing conversions of state-chartered CUs to federal charters, the threat of taxation, the reluctance of some states to modernize state laws, and favoritism for the banks in states whose regulators oversee all financial institutions. Last year the group addressed courtesy pay, mutual savings bank conversions, and interstate issues. With the significant level of state legislative and regulatory activities that affect credit unions including unprecedented banker attacks, facing the state credit union system, it is critical that leagues have a vehicle for identifying emerging issues and coordinating responses on behalf of credit unions, said AACUL Executive Director Susan Newton.
