ALBANY, N.Y. – The New York State Credit Union League is keeping its eye on several bills recently introduced in the state legislature that pertain to state-chartered credit unions. Among them is one that would amend the banking and tax laws to exempt state-chartered credit unions from sales and compensating use taxes. The bill, which is a reintroduction of an earlier measure sponsored by the League, is sponsored by Assembly Banks Committee Chair Catherine Nolan (D-Queens). The League expects the Senate will reintroduce the bill soon, as well. Another bill, also introduced in the state Assembly, would amend the banking law to ensure that banks and credit unions don't print a consumer's account number on electronic or ATM receipts. Still a third bill the NYSCUL is following would increase the penalty for robbing a financial institution.
