ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Martin Luther King Junior Elementary Schoolhas signed a Partnership Agreement with MidWest Financial CreditUnion to open a student-run credit union branch at the school."When the credit union approached King about this program, I askedthem to present the idea to the students," said MLK JuniorElementary Principal Dr. Edmundson. "A select number of 5th graderslistened to the idea, presented it to the rest of the school, andtogether we decided it was a good fit for us. The students arereally excited about it." While the branch operating days and hoursare still being set, training for the student volunteers is slatedto begin soon. In addition to the branch, credit union volunteerswill teach the Junior Achievement program to every class at KingElementary. "Junior Achievement will help students learn and applymoney management principles beyond what we can teach with anin-school branch," said MidWest Financial CU School BranchCoordinator Lesley Arthur. "It's just one more way to reach thestudents and make the lessons meaningful and fun." The KingElementary program is MidWest Financial's second student-run schoolbranch. Fortis Academy in Ypsilanti, Michigan teamed up with thecredit union for a student-run school branch earlier this year.
