LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union's Lafayette Jefferson High School branch has officially opened its doors. The branch is Indiana's first student run credit union located in a high school. "Our Build the Future strategic plan focuses on creating opportunities for our students, services for our faculty and staff, and active partnerships with the business community. We are proud to be partnering with PEFCU to bring this unique experience to Jefferson High School," said Vince Bertram, JHS Principal. The PEFCU branch, named Jefferson's PEFCU @ School, is operated by students and supervised by a PEFCU representative. The 388 square-foot branch can be accessed from just outside the cafeteria and accommodates three tellers, a supervisor, computers, a safe, and a security system. The branch is open Monday through Friday from 7:05 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:35 p.m. The credit union internship will provide opportunities for hands-on experience developing and executing a marketing plan, working in a professional environment, as well as participating on an advisory committee for evaluation and selection of products and services while working at the branch. Student tellers will first be recommended by their teacher, then will be interviewed, trained, and expected to meet the same qualifications as any other PEFCU employee. "This really is the foundation of our vision - being able to take PEFCU and our commitment to literacy out into the community," said PEFCU President/CEO Bill Connors. "We certainly hope that as these young people come in the PEFCU branch as employees or members, that this becomes a model for our community." Founded in 1911, Lafayette Jefferson High School is one of only 13 high schools in the nation to be a two time national Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award winner, which is the highest honor given by the United States Department of Education. There are some 2,300 students in grades nine though 12.
