GREENSBORO, N.C. – More than $610,000 has now been raised by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation to help fund Victory Junction Gang Camp, the facility opened in 2004 to provide joy and medical treatments for seriously ill youngsters. “While the foundation is active in many projects that benefit credit unions and credit union members, there’s no doubt that folks here have really taken the Victory Junction project to heart,” said Steve Elam, executive director, in a yearend report. In addition to Victory Junction located in Randleman, N.C., the Foundation during the year also provided scholarship funds to CU members, hurricane relief in Florida and organizational resources to small CUs. In 2002, credit unions originally pledged $500,000 over three years to the camp, but they saw that goal eclipsed by the middle of 2004. CUs in North and South Carolina decided to pledge an additional $500,000 over 18 months. These two pledges, said Elam, along with another $400,000 pledge to build a spiritual center at the camp, put the total CU commitment at nearly $1.5 million. “Victory Junction has gotten some big-time NASCAR donations over the years,” said Elam, “but believe it or not, credit unions are the largest donors to the camp.”
