WASHINGTON-Top CUNA and NAFCU officials and lobbyists were pounding the marble of the congressional office buildings Jan. 4 as swearing-in ceremonies took place on the first day of the 109th Congress. In the morning, representatives from NAFCU met with both Alaska Senators Ted Stevens (R) and Lisa Murkowski (R). They also welcomed Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), a former member of the House, to his new seat in the Senate. CUNA Vice President of Legislative Affairs and Senior Legislative Counsel Gary Kohn explained that CUNA had more than half-a-dozen staff there and were joined in Hill visits by officials and credit unions from 12 state leagues. “It was a busy day altogether, but it was a good day,” Kohn said. NAFCU also cosponsored an event for Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) that evening. NAFCU and CUNA worked with others to cosponsor a separate event for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) the same night. The DeLay event was supporting the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.
