Looking back four years ago finds NCUA Chairman Norman D’Amours resigning under pressure from the White House. The general reaction to the news in CU-land was an overwhelming sense of “it’s time for all of us to move on.” Though D’Amours’ letter did not specifically offer a resignation, its tone did. “It was a great honor being associated with your presidency, and I will always be grateful for your many kindnesses and your support. If ever I am in a position to render any service to you, please do not hesitate to ask,” said D’Amours in his resignation letter to President Clinton. That issue also finds 30 credit unions in South Carolina joining with the South Carolina Credit Union League’s service corporation to form an ATM CUSO. The Credit Union Member Access Corp. provides a network of no-surcharge ATMs in underserved areas throughout the state. “There is a need for this,” said the CUSO’s CEO Ed Culpepper. “Credit unions here are having a hard time competing with banks for member checking accounts and to become their members’ primary financial institution because they don’t offer ATMs. So this CUSO has been formed for the good of the credit union system here.”
