First Financial Federal Credit Union of Maryland, Lutherville, Md., longtime board member Dr. James Skarbek has died. Dr. Skarbek began his service to First Financial FCU in 1972 as a member and eventual chairman of the supervisory committee. In addition to serving on the supervisory committee for 30 years, he also volunteered on the CU’s human resources and scholarship committees. In 1996, Dr. Skarbek was elected to First Financial’s board of directors where he served until his death. Dr. Skarbek worked for the Baltimore County Public School system as an educator and principal for 45 years. He took his greatest satisfaction from the children he taught and giving back to the community. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Johns Hopkins Cancer Center or to the James Skarbek Library at Relay Elementary School in Baltimore County. SECU Credit Union, Baltimore, Md., founder Henry Albert Heinmuller Jr. has died at the age of 93. Heinmuller and a small group of leaders began operations as State Employees Credit Union of Maryland in October, 1951 in the hallway of the Miller Building in downtown Baltimore. The credit union has grown from 33 members and $3,487 in assets to serving 240,000 members and having over $1.4 billion in assets. Heinmuller served on the board for 42 years and was chairman for 16 years. He was named the credit union’s first director emeritus and was recently honored at SECU’s 50th anniversary annual meeting.
