ST. PAUL, Minn. – Governor Tim Pawlenty signed a proclamation declaring Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, to be Credit Union Day in the state of Minnesota. The proclamation states, "Credit unions are developing strong alliances that transcend political and geographical boundaries and make financial democracy possible in many countries around the world. Credit unions unite in education and service systems to remain viable, progressive institutions and to better serve member needs." Minnesota is home to 176 credit unions that serve more than 1.5 million members. "We appreciate the acknowledgement and support of Governor Pawlenty and President Bush," said Kevin Chandler, MnCUN president/CEO, "It is important that we educate not only our members, but our potential members and local communities about the credit union difference. As member-owned, not-for-profit cooperatives, credit unions are not only providing a viable alternative to for-profit institutions but are providing better service to their members."
