MERRILLVILLE, Ind. - While some may go to the gym in their spare time, Northern Indiana Federal Credit Union President/CEO Sandra Heller hits her very own horse farm. Heller says she has been very lucky- not only does she have the man of her dreams as her husband but he also came with a horse farm. "When I was younger I always wanted a horse and when we got married David already had these three beautiful horses-now we have 13," said Heller. "Life doesn't get better than this." The couple's stables consist of a breed of horses not commonly found in the Midwest- Pasofinos, which means fine walk in Spanish. There's a horse for every occasion at this farm-some are available for sale, others provide trail rides and a few are even shown. In fact, one of Heller's mares La Fantasia de Profeta, Fancy for short, has been with the Hellers since she was a baby and has developed into one of their best show horses. It's no wonder since Fancy's sire is three-time Grand National Champion Profeta de Besily. "What I love most about horses is their personality. I might be biased but our horses are just so good natured that they are just a lot of fun to watch," said Heller. Heller says the adage "time flies when you're having fun" applies to the work on the farm. "When you break it down on a daily basis it's no different than taking time out to do other activities that you enjoy. For me it is just a half hour in morning and a half hour in the evening and some of the other more involved duties like when we receive the hay delivery may take a few hours but we just love it," said Heller. "It also helps that my husband is retired now so he has more time to put into the farm." [email protected]
