HIGHTSTOWN, N.J.-New Jersey Credit Union League Special Events/Meeting Planner Yvette Segarra and her husband disapproved of their son’s decision to be an organ donor, but did not think they would have to think about it. “If my husband and I hadn’t seen it on my son’s driver’s license, we never would have done it,” she explained. When 23-year-old Jason died in an accident in 1999, Segarra found out it was the best decision he ever made. Jason’s organ donations ended up saving three lives. “My son is a true hero. It was his decision,” she said. Now, Segarra, along with her daughter, volunteers her time for The Sharing Network, a federally certified procurement organizations responsible for recovering organs and tissue for N.J. residents awaiting transplants, and Transplant Speakers International, an organization of recipients working to educate the public on the importance of organ and tissue donation. Segarra speaks at NJCUL chapter meetings, hospital fairs, Red Cross meetings, drivers’ education courses, and at her son’s old high school. She said her mission is to get one person to sign a donor card at each event she volunteers at. Far from her original view of organ donation, Segarra now says, “We have gifts to give.” [email protected]
