As this graphic from TowerGroup and the CERT Coordination Center shows, general security threats online have escalated quickly. Additionally, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) says it processed more than 120,000 complaints in 2003 (up from 48,252 in 2002). The Federal Trade Commission also has recorded a steep increase in Internet-related fraud, with 166,617 consumer fraud reports in 2003 (up from 110,288 in 2002). The inset of Exhibit 1 shows how financial institutions are raising their level of security to guard against increasingly sophisticated threats.
