WATERLOO, Iowa - Consumers here saving towards their first home,college expenses or starting or expanding a business, may be ableto get each dollar they save matched through a popular savingsprogram. Through Operation Works' Building Assets for the Futureprogram, the Iowa Social and Economic Development (ISED) programalong with the Iowa League of Credit Unions, John Deere CommunityCU and several other local and state partners, individualretirement accounts (IRAs) will be offered. Through IRAs, depositsmade by account holders will be matched dollar for dollar by ISED.Participants are required to complete financial education classesthat aim to help set up realistic savings goals. The ISED islooking for people who can save at least $500 over the next fivemonths, said Opportunity Works Project Coordinator Stacy Van Gorp.An extended program will challenge participants to save $3,000 perperson or $8,000 per household over three- to five-years. OtherBuilding Assets for the Future partners are Operation Threshold,Mid Iowa Community Action, Cedar Valley's Promise, Iowa StateExtension, US Bank, Northeast Iowa Food Bank and the Cedar ValleyUnited Way.
