DUBLIN, Ohio – The Ohio Credit Union League hopes a new Web site, www.ohioconsumers.org, will help arm consumers here with the weapons they'll need to fight fraud and identity theft. Launched during National Consumer Protection Week, the consumer information Web site is designed to help locals not only avoid the latest scams but also increase their financial literacy. OCUL partnered with the Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro, Ohio Consumers' Counsel, Ohio State University Extension Office and U.S. Postal Service to post Web topics ranging from Top 10 Consumer Rules and Top Five Fraud Schemes to Top 10 Reasons to Learn More About Financial Literacy. The site also includes a section for educators who want to teach their students about personal finances. "We know that when it comes to financial education, ignorance can be very costly," said OCUL President Paul Mercer. "Ohioans need to know how to make the most of their money, and how to protect the money and the good credit that they have earned. We've launched OhioConsumers.org as a clearinghouse for this type of helpful information." Throughout the month of February the site will promote National Consumer Protection Week. Beginning in March, the OCUL will continue to update the site regularly to provide timely consumer information, fraud alerts and links year-round. Officials from credit unions around the state have also volunteered to help present National Consumer Protection Week informational sessions hosted by the U.S. Postal Service and Ohio Consumers' Counsel. National Consumer Protection Week is sponsored nationally by the Federal Trade Commission with other government agencies. This year's theme is "Financial Literacy: Earning a Lifetime of Dividends."
