SALT LAKE CITY – In a move seen as improving ties with state lawmakers, the Utah League of Credit Unions disclosed it has on its staff a state senator put in charge of the League's year-old Education Foundation and the "100% for Kids" program. Hired to manage the foundation's school grants under the "Credit Unions 100% for Kids" program is Sen. Paula Julander (D-Salt Lake City). Julander, a nurse who previously served for four years in the Utah House, was hired by the League in October. A news release issued last week by the League quotes Julander as calling CUs "real heroes for what they are doing with Utah schools." The release noted that the Foundation since its inception in December 2002 has given out $1.2 million, of which $215,000 has been dispersed since October. "I have always felt credit unions do a fantastic job serving the public," she said. "It's been a privilege and an honor to help them provide equipment, supplies, books, and so much more for schools." Just what other duties she might have for the League were not spelled out in the news release which also noted Julander has long "supported Utah credit unions."
