SACRAMENTO – To educate credit unions on how the IRnet can potentially help Latin American immigrants send money back home, the California Credit Union League and the World Council of Credit Unions will hold a workshop on how the remittance system works. The `Remittances: A Tool for Growth on Both Sides of the Border' workshop will be held on Nov. 20 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, following the conclusion of the League's Annual Meeting and Convention. Among the speakers will be Javier Villaz, deputy consul general of Mexico in San Diego, who will discuss ways credit unions can reach Mexican immigrants by accepting the Matricula Consular. Officials from the Federacin de Asociaciones de Ahorro y Crdito de El Salvador, or FEDECACES, the national federation of Salvardoran credit unions, and Caja Popular Mexicana, the largest credit union in Mexico, will discuss ways credit unions in Latin America are promoting IRnet to their members. California credit unions currently using IRnet will also share their experiences. Nearly $10 billion is remitted to Mexico alone from U.S. residents every year, according to WOCCU.
