WASHINGTON - CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica was recently electedchair of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Mica's election tookplace following the decision by the former chair, the Hon. Paul G.Rogers, to resign from his role. NOF was founded in 1984 and Rogershas served as the first NOF Chair since June 1985. Mica has servedas a member of the NOF Board of Trustees since 2000. Mica workedclosely with Rogers during their days as Florida HouseRepresentatives on several major public health issues includingosteoporosis. Throughout his legislative career, Rogers, known bymany as "Mr. Health," introduced major legislation such as theNational Cancer Act and the Research on Aging Act. "I have greatrespect for Paul Roger's significant contribution to NOF and to theissue of osteoporosis," Mica said. "His leadership and commitmenthas helped to establish the NOF as the national charitableorganization focusing on osteoporosis, a disease that touchesmillions of Americans. I look forward to building upon his greatwork as NOF strives to reduce the impact and prevalence ofosteoporosis through awareness, advocacy, education and research."More than 44 million Americans, aged 50 and older, either have orare at risk for osteoporosis, the Foundation reports. NOF is anonprofit, voluntary health organization dedicated to promotinglifelong bone health to reduce osteoporosis and associatedfractures, while working to find a cure for the disease throughprograms of research, education and advocacy.
