Looking back 11 years ago finds credit unions in Florida recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Andrew. Homestead Air Force Base Federal Credit Union had to pump out 184 gallons of rainwater from its lobby and clear trees from its parking lot. "It's a miracle we are even open," said HAFBFCU Vice President of Marketing Kim Sovia. "Members are thrilled when they see their credit union come through this. The fact is we're working under these conditions and they know it and now our members have even more trust in us. After the dust settles I think we're really going to come out on top." Also in that issue an unprecedented demand for first mortgage refinancings has credit unions reevaluating their mortgage services. "My advice to other credit unions intent on getting into mortgages is to make sure you're willing to pay the price for investing in a fully qualified professional management staff, because mistakes when it comes to judging interest rate risk can be very costly," said Telephone Employees CU Vice President of Real Estate William Steele.
