RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. – Karen Hughes, President George W. Bush's first communications director and the person once described by the Dallas Morning News as "the most powerful woman ever to serve in the White House" is one of the major speakers who will address attendees at the California Credit Union League's 2003 Annual Meeting and Convention, Nov. 17-19 in San Diego. Hughes left the White House in 2002 to move with her family back to Texas, but she continues to advise Bush on communication strategy through a retainer arrangement with the National Republican Committee. Joining Hughes as keynote speakers will be Ann Rhoades, former vice president of people for JetBlue Airways and one of the five core leaders to launch JetBlue Airways in February 2000, and award-winning actor, economist, writer, journalist, and teacher Ben Stein. Stein is probably best known from his roles in the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and the television series "The Wonder Years." Aside from also being a economist and lawyer, Stein also served as a speechwriter for former presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. The three-day conference will be held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt and also features educational sessions, a supplier pavilion, awards recognition, annual business meetings of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues, and several optional events and tours.
