The Small Business Administration is growing in importance to credit unions since it overturned a previous policy earlier this year, allowing more credit unions to participate in SBA’s guaranteed 7(a) lending program. The guaranteed portion of a SBA-backed loans made by a credit union does not count against their member business lending cap. The 7(a) program is SBA’s primary avenue for helping small businesses obtain financing they may not receive through typical avenues. Other programs include the 504 for certified development companies; 7(m) for short term loans up to $35,000 for small business and non profit child care centers for capital or to purchase supplies; SBA can pre-qualify a borrower prior to their going to a commercial lender.
