SALEM, Ore. – Gov. Ted Kulongoski signed in to law June 17 a bill that allows the state's credit unions to accept public deposits, which are deposits made into a financial institution by the treasurer of any state or local government unit or agency of the unit. Eighteen other states have public funds bills that allow credit unions to accept public deposits. Senate Bill 331 passed the state Senate by a 22-5 vote, and the House of Representatives 51-5. Pamela Leavitt, svp of governmental affairs and public relations for Credit Union Association of Oregon called the bill's passage "a huge victory for Oregon's credit unions."
