MADISON, Wis. – A new statement insert from CUNA will highlight measures that credit union members can take to keep their ATM use free of fraud. The statement will focus on standard ATM dangers like muggings, purse snatchings and card theft and will advise credit union members to never write their personal identification numbers on their cards, to be aware of their surroundings as they approach the ATM and to be prepared to make their transaction before they arrive at the teller. Significantly, the insert will not mention any of the more technologically sophisticated ATM frauds that involve "skimmer devices" which record card information when it is swiped. Such devices and schemes have drawn increasing attention from ATM deployers in recent months. Veronica LaDuke, CUNA spokeswoman, said that while this insert is "pretty basic," she anticipated other consumer products that address sophisticated fraud are being developed.
