HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Pennsylvania House of Representatives is considering legislation that would prohibit the use of social security numbers in credit card transactions. House Bill 279, sponsored by state Rep. Jim Lynch (R-65) would prohibit persons who accept credit cards for business transactions from requesting the card holders' social security number. The bill is currently in the House Commerce and Economic Development Committee. Jan Hartman, vice president governmental affairs for the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association said the legislation "is part of the trend to protect the identity of consumers. Legislators in both Harrisburg and Washington have become more vigilant to the crime of identity theft and they are taking steps to protect consumers."
