These charts reflect some key data VISA has collected on card portfolio management and profitability. The two pie charts indicate the rise of debit cards in both the numbers of new cards issued and in the growing role of cards in incremental spending. The growth in debit is significant in light of the two graphs that indicate that the total finance charge revenue has been dropping as consumers become more familiar with using their cards, and paying on them, earlier and more frequently. That lower finance charge revenue in turn makes cardholder retention even more important, as the charts indicate that the longer members hold their cards, the more profitable their accounts will be. Another chart illustrates some of the reasons cardholders give up their cards.
